Located in Cocoa since 1989 after relocating from Miami. Chan first moved to Florida in 1976 from New York where he started as an apprentice marine surveyor in 1967 working under a professional after ten years in engineering and several more in business.

His background includes overseas military service, a degree in physics, graduate work in electronics, work as a senior aerospace-electronics engineer on classified R&D projects and then co-owner of a new car & truck dealership. He did work as a port engineer on ships, has done yacht brokerage and had his own yacht servicing business. Chan began marine surveying 42+ years ago, but has been doing marine surveying exclusively for the past 22+ years. His work includes conducting damage surveys for Boat U.S. Marine Insurance Claims Division for the past fifteen or more years and he served on their Catastrophy Field Team during the multiple '04 and '05 hurricane disasters in Florida. His boating experience includes sailing and motor boating on Long Island Sound, off the U.S. East coast, Chesapeake Bay, both Florida coasts, Caribbean, trans-Atlantic and Mediterranean.
